Posthumous commemorative Ceremony in honor of Comrade Kathleen (Kit) MacNeillSaturday, April 12, 2008
The Beauséjour Regional Health Authority, in collaboration with the Branch #6 of the Royal Canadian Legion, unveiled a commemorative plaque in honor of Comrade Kathleen (Kit) MacNeill, during a posthumous ceremony at the Moncton Veterans Health Centre, on April 12th 2008.
Comrade Kathleen (Kit) MacNeill was born in 1923 in Charlottetown, Prince-Edward-Island. She joined the Canadian Woman’s Army Corp in 1942. After World War II, she moved with her husband, Robert MacNeill to Dalhousie, where they founded their family. Comrade MacNeill was highly involved in Royal Canadian Legion, holding numerous executive positions with the Ladies Auxiliary and as president of the branch #17. In 1989, she moved to Moncton and became, in 1994, the first female president of the branch #6 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Comrade Kathleen MacNeill was devoted to the well-being of veterans. She wanted what was best for her comrades: a warm and comfortable place where they would feel at home.
As the president of the committee for the creation of the Veterans Health Centre, Mrs. MacNeill dedicated countless hours of work, participated at numerous meetings, traveled the province and organized important fund raising activities to attain her goal. She eagerly wished that her comrades, who were, in the past, hosted in a crowded unit at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital, would have a better quality of life.
It is in great part, thanks to her exceptional devotion that in 2001, the construction began for the Veterans Health Centre in Moncton. The centre, administered the Beauséjour Regional Health Authority, serves as a permanent residence for veterans and provides extended geriatric care and recreational activities for those who have lost their ability to care for themselves.
« On behalf of the Beauséjour Regional Health Authority, I want to pay tribute to this brave and hard-working woman, who devoted her life to helping others,” indicated Mrs. Lise Guerrette-Daigle, Vice-Président of Nursing and Clinical Care at the Beauséjour Health Authority.
In January 2007, Comrade Kathleen (Kit) MacNeill passed away, leaving behind wonderful memories for her family and fellow veterans, and a legacy of which all can be thankful.
